2. Constitution
I) Title
University of Regina Iranian Society (URIS)
II) Objectives
URIS is a club founded by the Iranian students at the University of Regina in order to:
- Promote an understanding of Iranian culture.
- Provide a source of friendship and support for the Iranian community within the University of Regina.
- Help to foster a relationship between Iranians and other cultural groups.
- Provide information and help Iranian newcomers become familiar with the University of Regina.
- Provide recreational and social activities for club members and the Iranian community in Regina.
- URIS is not affiliated with any political party or organization and does not promote any religion or religious thoughts, but respects the identities of all its members.
III) Membership
- Membership is available to all students, scholars, employees and alumni of the University of Regina who are interested in Iranian culture.
- A Member is a person who signs the club Registration form.
- Membership should be renewed annually.
- Members have the right to vote at general meetings.
- Members can cancel their membership at any time.
IV) Meetings
- General meetings are held at least once a year, at the request of the executive committee, or at the request of at least 10% of the members with one week advanced notice.
- A general meeting can be held officially if at least 50% of the members are present or at the discretion of the majority of executive committee and present members.
- For a proposal to be adopted, at least 51% of the present members must vote in favor of adopting it at the general meeting.
- The agenda should be specified before the meeting and cannot be changed during the meeting.
- Any motion should be proposed by at least 2 members.
VIII) Executive Committee
- Executive committee is responsible for URIS activities.
- Members of Executive committee are elected annually, before the end of September at the general meeting.
- Officers and duties are:
? President:
o Supervises the affairs of URIS.
o Presides over executive and general meetings.
o Maintains records and correspondence.
o Organizes recreational activities.
? Vice-President Finance:
o Keeps an accurate account of receipts and expenditures.
o Collects and deposits all funds as directed by the executive committee and/or membership.
o Prepares financial statements.
o Organizes social events such as celebrations, picnics and sporting activities.
o Performs the duties of president in his/her absence.
? Vice-President Communication:
o Announces events and activities.
o Is in charge of email and the website.
o Communicates with other clubs and societies to promote URIS activities and Iranian culture.
? Substitute Executive Member:
o Performs the duties of an absent executive member, except those of the president.
o Performs the duties of the vice-president finance in president’s absence.
- Other officers may be deemed necessary by the executive committee and this executive positional will conditional pending a 51% majority approval vote by present members.
- If a position is vacated a replacement is elected at a general meeting.
- The executive position is deemed vacated and hence subject to replacement upon an executive members absence in ½ or more of URIS meetings within a 3 month span.
V) Finance
Handled exclusively by the executive committee, and includes:
- Society earnings, expending and account management.
- Preparation of Financial Statement:
- This is done at the end of fiscal year for all members.
- This may be done at the request of executive committee.
- The fiscal year ends on April 30th.
VI) Non-Profit
- URIS is a non-profit organization.
- All funds are used to achieve the objectives of URIS.
- No funds will occur to the benefit of any single member.
VII) Amending the Constitution
- It can occur at general meetings with the vote of at least 2/3 of the present membership.
No activity of URIS should be in violation of any applicable federal or provincial laws of Canada including the charter of rights and freedom and the universal declaration of human rights.
